Ask ELi Live at Hooked: Come Join Us!
Hey, ELi readers: Been meaning to check out Hooked, the new bookstore/wine bar/coffee shop on Michigan Avenue across from Frandor?
Then come join us Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. for a special addition of “Ask ELi Live!” and meet ELi Managing Editor Julie Seraphinoff and me, ELi’s publisher and city government reporter.
You can grab a beverage, ask us questions about East Lansing and about our reporting, join the conversation and get a little holiday shopping in while you’re at it.
At this episode of Ask ELi Live, I’ll be offering a short tutorial on tax capture, helping to explain why it turns out that East Lansing homeowners are paying full freight for city services while a large chunk of downtown properties are not.
As explained in this recent article, these downtown property owners pay the same city millage as homeowners But all their city taxes above baselines set in the 1990s have been going directly to the Downtown Development Authority, not to the city’s general fund which pays for services like police and fire.
We’re also happy to take questions on lots of other topics.
And if you’re interested in becoming a reporter with ELi, this is a great opportunity to get connected with us on that.
Hooked is located at 3142 E. Michigan Avenue in Lansing, and the event will run from 5:30-6:45 p.m. (City Council starts at 7 p.m. at the Hannah Community Center.) Hope to see you there!
