ELHS Running Track Open to Public on Weekdays
ELi has been getting questions from readers about why the East Lansing High School running track has been closed to the public. Now, after some nudging by a resident, ELPS Superintendent Dori Leyko said the track will be open for 10 hours a day on weekdays.
“We will be offering community track hours from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday through August 7 when our fall sports will begin practicing on the turf,” Leyko said yesterday afternoon by email. At that point, the district will “adjust the schedule.”
Nancy Cuddeback pushed Leyko to open the track up for regular use. While there are plenty of places to run and walk in East Lansing, the track surface at the high school is easy on the joints and makes it simple to do timed sprints of particular distances.
“I love the multigenerational, multicultural crowd that the track serves…when it’s open,” Cuddeback told ELi by email.
She’s hoping Leyko will consider leaving the track open until 7 p.m. on weekdays and opening the track to the public on weekends, too.
“Over the years, many EL residents, old, young, and in between, have enjoyed and appreciated the opportunities that our top-notch track facility has provided,” Cuddeback said.
We’ll update this article if the hours are extended.
