ELi Won’t Be Publishing This Week
This coming week (starting today, Friday, March 24), East Lansing Public Schools are on spring break. Following its tradition of syncing its calendar to ELPS, the City of East Lansing is holding very few public meetings this coming week. The two exceptions will be the University Student Commission’s meeting on Tuesday, March 28, and a special public hearing of the police oversight commission on Wednesday, March 29.
ELi has long made the habit of also taking a break in publication this week to give our editorial and reporting team a rest. We’re doing that again this year, starting tomorrow.
This has been a pretty brutal year of reporting. We’ve had more “stories of the year” than we can count, many of them hard to report, and the first quarter of the year isn’t even over. Our resources have been stretched thin and we’re finding ourselves not covering stories we would really like to report. As I’ve told you in a previous “Your ELi” column, our expenses have been running over budget because of the extraordinary level of news.
Taking a break won’t solve these problems, but it will help us recharge. And that’s critical.
If you value what ELi brings, now’s a great time to make sure you are connected through the East Lansing Insider. We use the Insider to push out news via email, which allows us to avoid the algorithmic filtering-out of our news that occurs with Twitter and Facebook.
This year, we’re working on getting back to holding more in-person gatherings with our readers. If space is limited for these events – as with our special screening of “Storm Lake” on April 13 – we are sharing the opportunity first with Insider members, then Insider subscribers, then our general readership. So that’s another benefit of subscribing.
We’ve also started using the weekly Insider newsletter to share news “in brief.” Last week, for example, we shared news on three stories that we did not bring at our website. This means that if you’ve not subscribed to the Insider, you’re missing news.
