Kelli Ellsworth-Etchison, member of East Lansing's Study Committee on an Independent Police Oversight Commission, has been appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to the state’s Black Leadership Advisory Council.

As the Study Committee on an Independent Police Oversight Commission continues its work conducting research into policing and police oversight, and developing advice for City Council, ELi reporter Heather Brothers and I talked today with Study Committee member Kelli Ellsworth-Etchison for ELi’s podcast.

We asked Kelli to come on in advance of Monday’s public-input session by the Study Committee. Here’s information about that March 29 meeting from the City:

“The meeting will begin with an overview of what the Study Committee is working to accomplish, followed by small group break-out discussions. Feedback from the meeting will be used to help the Study Committee finalize its recommendations to the East Lansing City Council on the establishment of an independent police review board/commission. Any interested community members are invited to attend.” Read more here.

On the pod, Kelli shares her take on the Study Committee’s work, including the national context, and also talks about her own experiences as a Black woman living (and driving) in East Lansing. Have a listen:
