Applications Being Accepted for Vacant Seat on East Lansing’s School Board
As ELi reported, East Lansing Public Schools Trustee Debbie Walton resigned her seat on the Board of Education on Monday. She cited only “personal reasons.”
Now, the board has announced how community members can apply to be appointed to the seat. The person appointed will serve through the end of Walton’s elected term, Dec. 31, 2024.
Interested parties are being asked to send a letter to Tali Faris-Hylen, the trustee who serves as the secretary of the board. Letters should include information about applicant’s background and experience, and they can be sent by email to Kelly Hocquard (kelly.hocquard@elps.us), staff to the board. They can also be mailed or dropped off at the high school, 501 Burcham Dr., East Lansing, Michigan, 48823.
The deadline for applying is Feb. 24 at 4 p.m.
After that, the board will schedule interviews with applicants. Under the Open Meetings Act, interviews will need to be conducted in public if interviews include a quorum of the board gathering together. (As ELi reported, the board has recently been warned by its attorney to heed the Open Meetings Act.)
A majority of the board will decide on the appointment. The vote will occur at a public meeting.
