The City of East Lansing is seeking applicants for its Emerging Leaders Program. The program consists of a relatively in-depth introduction to the operations of the City of East Lansing, and people who are planning to run for City Council at a later date sometimes opt to enroll.
Those who are interested in applying for the 2022 program have until Dec. 6, 2021, to submit an application, available online here.
According to a City press release outlining the 2022 program and application process, the program is a year-long “course in civic engagement, designed to support today’s emerging leaders.”
Participants in the Emerging Leaders Program will meet monthly from January through November, and will learn from local community leaders in business and government.
More specifically, the 2022 participants “will hone leadership and public service skills by learning about a variety of course topics, including economic and cultural development, emergency response, municipal finance and more.”
The City’s webpage for the program notes that past graduates of the Emerging Leaders Program have gone on to be active members in the community, sometimes serving on boards and commissions, as well as City Council.
To be eligible for the program, applicants must reside in East Lansing and be 18 years of age or older. Applicants can’t be running for, or currently serving in, an elected office.
There will be a $55 fee charged to applicants who are accepted into the program, to help pay for the program. There are scholarships available, and you can learn more about them here.
A general description and broader details about the program — including the 2022 calendar of meetings — can be seen at the general webpage for the program here.
Anyone with questions is encouraged to reach out to the City’s Planning, Building and Development Director, Tom Fehrenbach, at email@example.com or (517) 319-6887.
And don’t forget that applications close on Monday, Dec. 6.
