East Lansing Shelter-in-Place Order Continues as Some Information Emerges
East Lansing continues under a shelter-in-place order at 11 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, following a series of shootings by a single suspect on the Michigan State University campus.
Information was released by officials at a press conference at MSU’s Henry Center at 11 p.m. tonight. Another press conference is expected to be held at midnight.
Officials believe there is a single shooter and he is described as being a Black man of shorter stature and wearing red shoes. [Update, 11:34 p.m. The suspect is now described as a “short black male, red shoes, jean jacket, ball cap. Contact Michigan State University Police to report any unusual or suspicious activity.”]
The suspect has not been apprehended and people in the East Lansing area warned to continue sheltering in place on and off campus.
The shooting is believed to have begun at Berkey Hall at 8:18 pm. The suspect is reported to have then gone to the MSU Union and continued shooting there.
Five victims have been reported, some of them in critical condition. Victims are being treated at Sparrow Hospital. [Update, 11:47 p.m.: WILX is reporting 3 people killed, five injured.]
MSU has announced that all activities including classes and sporting events are canceled at MSU for the next two days. People are asked not to come to campus.
At East Lansing High School, the lockdown continues where community members had gathered for the meeting of the East Lansing Public Schools Board. Other activities were also going on at the high school when the lockdown began.
Officer Scott Sexton from the East Lansing Police Department informed those present at about 11:15 p.m. that the lockdown is continuing at the high school to keep people safe there.
Superintendent Dori Leyko has announced there will be no school tomorrow for East Lansing Public Schools.
