ELHS Students Work to Support Capital Area Humane Society
East Lansing High School students are supporting the Capital Area Humane Society for a service project this winter.
Students are collecting cash, pet toys, collars, brushes, soft treats, old and new towels and blankets, and cleaning supplies for their “Sharing for the Shelter” donation drive.
Special Education Department Apprentice Renee Weirauch worked with the students leading the donation drive to write to ELi sharing information about their efforts.
The students started collecting donations Thursday, Dec. 12 and will continue with the drive through Thursday, Dec. 19. Students created posters and donation boxes for the drive that have been placed in the high school. One student has even made announcements over the school’s PA system letting other students and school faculty know about the opportunity to give.
The idea for the donation drive came from a student when the class was reading to one of the East Lansing High School emotional support dogs, Gus.
As of Dec. 17, the students have raised more than $200 and collected several items for the shelter. Weirauch’s email said students encourage community members who want to get involved to donate directly to the Capital Area Humane Society.
“[Students] all said that helping was our goal, and it is happening!” Weirauch’s email reads.
