Police Chief Kim Johnson Resigns
East Lansing Police Chief Kim Johnson has resigned, according to a press release sent by the city today (May 28). According to the release, Johnson’s resignation was effective last Monday (May 20).
In April, it was announced that Johnson was placed on paid administrative leave while an internal complaint was being investigated. No information was provided on the context of the complaint. City Manager Robert Belleman has declined to provide more information on why Johnson was being investigated. The latest press release provides no information on the status of that investigation.
According to the press release, Johnson served with the department from 1982-2012. He then returned in 2020 to serve as police chief.
Deputy Chief Chad Pride will serve as police chief in the interim. The city will conduct a comprehensive search for a new police chief that will be outlined later on, according to the press release.
