Seven Hospitalized After Two Shootings, Two Crashes in East Lansing
Two shootings and two vehicle-pedestrian crashes in East Lansing sent people to the hospital on Halloween night and early Sunday morning, Police Chief Jennifer Brown said.
At a press conference Sunday afternoon, Brown provided updates on the seven individuals hospitalized in connection to the four incidents. Six of those hospitalized are in stable condition and the condition of the other person is unknown. There is no known threat to the community at this time, Brown said.
“On one of our busiest nights, the East Lansing Police Department officers provided life saving aid to gunshot victims, secured multiple crime scenes and removed impaired drivers from our streets,” Brown said.
The first shooting took place near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street early Sunday morning. Three people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, Brown said. Two are in stable conditions and the status of the third is unknown. Brown did not say if a person was arrested in connection to this shooting.
The other shooting unfolded near Frye Avenue and Stoddard Street. Brown said two people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds and are now in stable condition. Brown said “several” individuals were taken into custody and multiple guns were recovered from the scene, though it’s still not known if these were the weapons used in the shooting.
There were also two serious car crashes that may have involved impaired drivers.
The first car-pedestrian crash occurred on Abbot Road near Library Lane, Brown said. The driver remained at the scene and was arrested under suspicion of operating while intoxicated. The pedestrian has since undergone surgery and is now in stable condition.
A second pedestrian was hit by a car at the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Gunson Street. A person was arrested for suspected operating while intoxicated and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. The victim is in stable condition.
Additionally, Brown said that the East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 incidents over 24 hours, with 75 incidents taking place over night.
Brown said the ELPD will be releasing more information as it becomes available and did not take questions after the roughly 4-minute long press conference.
