East Lansing Police Responding to Stabbing Fatally Shoot Man
While responding to a stabbing, East Lansing police shot and killed a man Wednesday evening.
Police were initially dispatched in response to a reported theft at a business near the Lake Lansing Road and Abbot Road intersection at 6:06 p.m. While officers were traveling to the location, police received a second call that a man had stabbed someone multiple times, Police Chief Jennifer Brown said at a press conference Wednesday night.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a suspect who appeared to have blood on him and be holding a weapon, Brown said.
The suspect ran towards officers and ignored requests to drop his weapon. Officers then shot the suspect, who was later pronounced dead, Brown said.
The victim of the stabbing is reportedly in critical condition at an area hospital, Brown said.
Brown said officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave during an investigation, as is standard procedure. The officer-involved shooting will be investigated by Michigan State Police.
Michigan State Police Public Information Officer Rene Gonzalez said information is very limited because of the “freshness” of the investigation, but state police detectives have been on scene. There is no timeline on the Michigan State Police investigation.
