ELi Publishes Obituaries and Death Notices

Alice Dreger January 6, 2021January 8, 2021

One of the central functions of a community newspaper is the witnessing of the loss of members of the community. While East Lansing Info (ELi) has in the past run obituaries only sporadically and generally for people who were well known locally, as ELi’s Publisher I want you to be aware that we are here to provide reporting and editing help as well as online space (at no charge) in this area.

We have created a page that assembles the obituaries we have run at our current website, eastlansinginfo.news.

If you would like to request that an obituary or death notice be posted at and shared by ELi, please contact us by using this page.

Please keep in mind the following:

We accept obituaries and death notices for individuals who lived in East Lansing at the time of their deaths or spent some significant portion of their lives here. By “significant,” we don’t mean that they had to live here a long time, but rather that living here was of significance in their lives. So this includes, for example, people who were MSU students and international scholars at MSU, people who spent years here but retired elsewhere, and people who grew up here but then lived their adult lives elsewhere.

We have reporters and editors who can assist with the composition of obituaries and death notices if that is needed. If you want our help writing an obituary, you should expect an assigned ELi reporter to spend about a total of an hour working with one or more persons who knew the deceased individual. We check the final copy with those who contacted us.

We do not charge to run an obituary or death notice at ELi. We also do not charge for having a reporter or editor assist. We provide this service as part of our public news service, and we pay for it as we do all our work – via donations to this local news service.

You can contact us weeks or even months after the death to make a request.

We reserve the right to make decisions about what is or is not published, as we are responsible for the content at ELi.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
