Five East Lansing Elementary School Students Taken to ER After Ingesting Marijuana Edibles
Five Robert L. Green Elementary School students were taken to the emergency room Tuesday after ingesting marijuana edible gummies a student brought from home, a parent and a school official confirmed to ELi.
Parents of Green elementary students received an email from Principal Amy Webster on Tuesday, explaining that five students “reported feeling ill as a result of ingesting an unknown substance at lunch brought from another child’s home.” East Lansing Info spoke with a parent of a Green elementary school student and a school district official about the incident, who said the substance was marijuana gummies.

Eight East Lansing Police Department officers arrived at the school after learning of the incident, according to sources who spoke with ELi. ELPD Chief Jen Brown told ELi via text that the department responded to a “non criminal incident” at the school.
A follow-up email sent by Green elementary Wednesday afternoon said the five students are “safe and well” and appropriate consequences and support “have been and will be in place for the students involved.”
The email also thanked the East Lansing police and fire departments for their support and told parents this was an isolated incident.
“This is a great opportunity to have a conversation with your family about personal responsibility and decision making, what is appropriate to bring to school and not sharing food or snacks at school,” the email reads.
“As well, you may choose as a family to talk about the age appropriateness of substances that may be lawful for adults, but not for children,” the email continues. “Illegal substances for children often present in ways that are appealing to children such as candy and sweets.”
ELPS Superintendent Dori Leyko declined to comment when reached by ELi.
ELi reached out to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow about the incident. Senior Media Relations Specialist Jeremiah Wilcox said, “Because of patient confidentiality, we cannot comment on specific cases.”
Children ingesting marijuana products that appear to be candy has been a problem in other school districts. In November 2025, students at Michigan’s Richfield Public Academy distributed marijuana gummies, leading to several students becoming ill.
This is a developing story.
