Prime Time Seniors to Host “Pay What You Want” Rummage and Bake Sale

If you have been thinking about doing some spring cleaning, this coming week you’ll have the perfect opportunity. 

East Lansing Prime Time Senior Program is hosting a “pay what you want” rummage and bake sale on May 14 and 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the west gym in the Hannah Community Center to support local seniors, and item donations are needed. 

Because there is nowhere to store items, Prime Time will begin accepting donations a day before the event on Wednesday, May 13, at 8 a.m. They are looking for gently used items like books or clothes that are in working order. The seniors program is also looking for volunteers to help organize donations.

Money raised at the sale will go towards the senior program’s operating budget and scholarships for seniors to participate in Prime Time’s programming. 

“We are considering this a rebuilding year because Prime Time hasn’t held a rummage sale here [since] pre-Covid … we’re just going to buckle down and see what we can do,” Prime Time Seniors Director Alesha Williams said. 

Prime Time will not be able to accept large items like certain appliances, mattresses, pianos, entertainment centers, baby furniture or medical equipment because of a lack of storage space and it is difficult to donate these items to another organization if they do not sell.

Williams highlighted that everything being sold was donated and most items won’t be priced. People can shop and make a donation amount of their choosing based on what they end up taking. Williams anticipates there may also be a priced section for more valuable items, like designer purses. 

“For the most part everything is pay what you can, pay what you want,” Williams said. 

Williams’ goal is to raise $5,000 at the sale. Prime Time seniors will be accepting payments through checks, cash and credit cards except for American Express. Those interested in donating or volunteering are encouraged to call the Prime Time Seniors office at 517-337-1113.
