Additional Victim Comes Forward After Recent Mass Shooting in East Lansing

Emily Joan Elliott May 25, 2021August 18, 2023

Original reports from the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) indicated that five people were injured in a mass shooting at The Quarters apartment complex, in the 6000 Block of Abbot Rd., just north of Lake Lansing Rd., shortly after midnight on May 16.

Following inquiries from readers, ELi followed up today on this story with Deputy Police Chief Steve Gonzalez to see if ELPD had any further information on the case. Gonzalez answered by providing the information that an additional victim recently came forward.

“This person was struck by a bullet or bullet fragment, but it did not penetrate their skin,” said Gonzalez.

The investigation is still active, and officers are looking into whether the May 16 shooting is related to another shooting on Abbot Rd. that occurred on St. Patrick’s Day, Gonzalez confirmed to ELi.

“Based on the information we have uncovered we do not believe there is an existing threat to the safety of the general public,” Gonzalez wrote to ELi in an email today.

He said that no one has been arrested or charged for the May 16 shooting, but he sees no active threat to the community.

He does suggest that East Lansing residents both in the Northern Tier and across the City take some safety precautions like locking all windows and doors when not home and leaving an exterior light on overnight.

He further said it is a good idea to let friends or family know your whereabouts, particularly if you will be alone in the evening. Gonzalez recommended that those hosting parties should know everyone in attendance and contact ELPD if a gathering “gets out of control or too large.”
