Community Events, Resources Available on Anniversary of MSU Shooting
On Feb. 13, 2023, a gunman killed three Michigan State University students, critically injured five others and devastated a community.
Thursday marks the two-year anniversary of the tragedy, and MSU is offering support for community members in need.
From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) and the MSU Employee Assistance Program will be taking drop-in appointments. CAPS is located at the Olin Health Center and the Employee Assistance program is at 110 Linton Hall.
From 1-4 p.m., community members will be offered a chance to give back through a service project at the Breslin Center Hall of History. Volunteers can take part in service projects that benefit Community Mental Health and CAPS, or participate in an advocacy and community engagement learning session.
Food will be provided for those who participate in a service project. There will also be supportive and quiet spaces made available. Learn more about the service projects at this webpage.

From 1 to 9 p.m., there will be designated spaces indoors and outdoors scattered around campus that offer information about resources available, will have comfort dogs stop by and provide bottled water and hot cocoa.
These spaces will also be pickup locations for luminary kits that community members are encouraged to light and post a picture of on social media with the hashtag #spartanstogether. The luminary kits are white paper bags with green electric tea lights.
These spaces will be located at:
- The corner of Farm Lane and Auditorium Road, near The Rock (outdoor)
- The corner of West Circle Drive and East Circle Drive, near the Grand River Ramp (outdoor)
- The corner of Beal Street and Chestnut Road, near the Sparty statue (outdoor)
- Breslin Center Hall of History (indoor, only from 1 to 4 p.m.)
- MSU Alumni Chapel (indoor)
From 8:10 to 8:25 p.m., community members are invited to Beaumont Tower for music, a moment of silence and the ringing of the Beaumont Tower Bell. From 6 p.m. Feb. 13 to 6 a.m. Feb 14, Beaumont Tower, Berkey Hall and the MSU Union will be lit green. A livestream of the event will also be available for Spartans worldwide to view.
